Queen Elizabeth

6) Queen Elizabeth

The Queen Elizabeth Rose was hybridized in 1954 by Doctor Walter Lammerts for Armstrong Nurseries (USA) in honor of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1952, and since then it has become one of the most popular roses in the world.

It is a splendid flower of bright light pink color with large full petals with a darker reverse, featuring a slender and elegant shape, usually grouped in large clusters.

The plant grows vigorously even in poor soil, on long erected stems, strong to be ideal for cutting.

It has large, sturdy leaves of deep green and a slight fragrance, making this rose a complete and worthy addition to any garden, even in limited space.

To categorize this new variety, which resulted from a cross between a floribunda and a hybrid tea a new class called ‘grandiflora’ was created within the rose family.

This new category retains the characteristics of the parent rose (recurrent blooming, long stems and disease resistance) but produces taller plants with a very subtle fragrance.

The rose immediately gained widespread acclaim and is still one of the best selling roses worldwide.

In our Rose Garden Queen Elizabeth can be found in many flower beds and also in the Hall of Fame, a recognition it received in 1979.
